Honorable Bede Ziedeng handing over medical non-drug consumables
The Member of Parliament for the Lawra Constituency, Hon. Bede Ziedeng, has donated medical non-drug consumables worth one hundred thousand Ghana cedis (GH¢100,000) to the Lawra Municipal Hospital to support healthcare delivery in the municipality.
The items presented include examination gloves, syringes and needles, gauze, cannulae, laboratory reagents, infusion giving sets, sutures, and detergents. These essential supplies are expected to improve the hospital’s capacity to provide critical services to patients.
Presenting the items at a brief ceremony, Hon. Bede Ziedeng explained that the donation is in response to an appeal made earlier this year by the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Musah Ziblila.
According to Hon. Bede Ziedeng, the hospital had been facing challenges in accessing basic consumables necessary for effective healthcare delivery.
He added that the donation forms part of his broader commitment to supporting key sectors within the municipality; adding that, he earlier supported the hospital with a projector valued at approximately GH¢8,000 and also funded the refurbishment of the hospital’s theater at a cost of about GH¢62,000.
“This ceremony, though simple, but it is very significant because it directly affects healthcare delivery in the Lawra Municipality,” he stated. “It also demonstrates the importance of collaboration between my office and other institutions as we work together to bring development to our people.”
Hon. Ziedeng reiterated his commitment to supporting various sectors including education, energy, roads, water, sanitation, and health, emphasizing that such interventions are guided by the availability of funds. He acknowledged that while the support may seem modest compared to the hospital’s numerous challenges, it addresses immediate and urgent needs identified by management.
He further assured the hospital of continued support in the future, subject to available resources, and cautioned that the donated items should be used responsibly and strictly in the interest of patients.

Receiving the items, the Medical Superintendent of the Lawra Municipal Hospital, Dr. Musah Ziblila, expressed profound gratitude to the MP for the timely intervention.
He described the consumables as critical to the hospital’s daily operations, noting that they form the backbone of healthcare delivery at the facility.
“These items may appear simple, but they are what our nurses and healthcare workers rely on at the bedside. They are essential for infection prevention, patient safety, and effective treatment,” he said.
Dr. Ziblila revealed that the hospital is currently facing significant operational and financial challenges, largely due to low outpatient department (OPD) attendance, which has affected revenue generation. As a result, the facility has struggled to procure essential consumables and has accumulated debts with suppliers, many of whom are unwilling to extend further credit.
He further indicated that the hospital has been unable to pay casual workers for several months, despite their critical role in supporting clinical services. Additionally, high overhead costs, driven by aging infrastructure and increasing maintenance needs, continue to strain the hospital’s limited resources.
He explained that management made a formal appeal to the MP about three months ago to support the procurement of consumables, and expressed relief that the request had been honored.
According to him, the donation will ensure the uninterrupted availability of essential medical supplies, help restore patient confidence, and potentially increase Out Patient Department attendance.
he also added that, the support from the MP will allow management to redirect funds towards settling outstanding debts and paying casual staff.
Dr. Ziblila assured that the items would be used judiciously and properly accounted for, adding that the hospital remains committed to improving healthcare delivery and patient safety.
He emphasized that the gesture by the MP highlights the shared responsibility required in strengthening the healthcare system and pledged that the hospital staff will continue to work diligently to serve the people of Lawra Municipality.
