Wa West District, September 2026 The Laadateng CHPS Compound, under the leadership of Community Health Officer Miss Wasaal Esther Yuora, organized a community durbar to raise awareness about the ongoing Free Primary Healthcare (FPHC) initiative, which is transforming access to healthcare in the region.
The durbar, held at the Laadateng catchment area, aimed to inform residents about the benefits and scope of the FPHC program, now active in 135 districts across all 16 regions of Ghana. The initiative, launched by President Mahama on April 15, 2026, is part of Ghana’s broader plan to improve healthcare access, with a target of covering 150 deprived districts by the end of 2026 and extending nationwide by the end of 2027.
During the event, Mr. Ninfaazuma Bernard, Community Health Officer at Kawu CHPS Compound, explained that the FPHC primarily covers basic healthcare services at community-level facilities, including CHPS compounds, health centres, and polyclinics. He emphasized that residents could receive treatment for common illnesses such as malaria, diarrhea, respiratory infections, hypertension, and diabetes without the need for an NHIS card.
“Many services like blood pressure and blood sugar screening, child health monitoring, family planning, nutrition education, and hygiene promotion are provided free of charge,”
Mr. Bernard stated. He also noted that some screenings, such as for certain cancers and mental health, are included within the initiative.
However, he cautioned residents that hospital admissions, surgeries, and specialist care still require NHIS registration. Therefore, residents are encouraged to register for NHIS to access the full spectrum of healthcare services beyond primary care.
“People should not ignore the importance of having an NHIS card, as it remains crucial for more advanced treatments,” he added.
The durbar was well-attended by community members, who expressed appreciation for the initiative, highlighting how it would ease the financial burden of healthcare. Community leaders also pledged to continue educating residents on the importance of health insurance registration and utilizing available health services.
As Ghana continues to expand its healthcare coverage, the Laadateng community’s active participation underscores the vital role of awareness and community engagement in achieving universal health coverage.
