KPAGLAGHI RESIDENTS CALLS FOR POTABLE DRINKING WATER

Some Residents of Kpaglaghi, a farming community under Wa East District of the Upper West Region are calling on government and philanthropist to support them with some social interventions.

Mr. Bunari Naa Yamusah, a resident in the community speaking to Radio Progress said they are resort to compete with their animals for water from the stream which is their only source of water whenever their borehole breaks down.

“Sometimes, we dig the ground to fetch water and the next day, animals go to drink and destroy it. You will have to dig again to fetch”, he said.

He added that, the situation hampers the economic activities of residents in the community since women have to spend several hours at the stream or borehole in search of water for their domestic use.

The opinion leader in the community also noted that, they are aware of the health risks associated with drinking from unhygienic sources but they have no option.

Mr. Faa, a resident and community unite committee chairman in the area, also told Radio Progress news that, their population has over weighed the single borehole, which caused it to easily break down due to the excessive pressure on the facility.

“one has to come and see our problem. Our borehole often breaks down, so we fetch water from the stream and unfortunately we are sharing the stream with animals”, he noted.

He said members of the community are exposed to some waterborne diseases and of which of residents’s productivity level is affected.

The residents are therefore making a passionate appeal to government through the Wa East District Assembly and other Civil Society Organizations in the country and beyond to come to their aid by providing them clean drinking water.

Meanwhile, it is detected that, poor health among residents living in rural communities is coupled with limited access to potable water.

The situation is further compounded in the dry seasons during which women cover long distances and spending hours competing with animals for water from streams and other open sources.

According to a Global Water Supply and Sanitation Assessment Report, over one billion people across the World do not have access to adequate and safe drinking water facilities with women and children being excessively affected.

Water is an essential prerequisite for development and growth, however, the situation where rural women spend hours every day, collecting and carting water directly from streams in competition with animals is a worrying development challenge.

It good to note that, water as an essential basic need must be available in order for human beings to survive and it must not be something for particularly women and children as they run their daily household chores.
