Deputy Communications Minister Inspects Girls in ICT Project, Urges ICT as Core School Subject

The Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation Mohammed Adams Sukparu has on 3rd September,2025,inspected the National Girls in ICT Project in the Upper West Region, meeting participants at McCoy College of Education in Nadowli-Kaleo and Wa Senior High School in Wa and pledging sustained government support for girls’ digital empowerment.

Hon. Sukparu, who also represents Sissala West in Parliament, observed training sessions and spoke directly with learners to assess progress and challenges. He outlined the project’s benefits, including scholarships, hands-on training, and improved employment pathways for female beneficiaries.

The deputy minister called for ICT to be incorporated as a core subject in the national curriculum alongside mathematics and science. He also flagged the forthcoming One Million Coders Initiative as an additional pathway for trainees to deepen coding and digital competencies.

Mr Sukparu reiterated the President’s commitment to the programme and promised ongoing ministry oversight. He indicated that the sector minister, Samuel Nartey George, is expected to officially commission the project, signaling high-level endorsement and follow-up.

The inspection drew leaders, including Nadowli-Kaleo District Chief Executive Mary Haruna, reflecting coordinated national and district efforts to scale the programme and ensure community buy-in.

Officials describe the Upper West rollout as a model for expanding gender-inclusive digital education nationwide, positioning the project as a strategic effort to reduce gender disparities in technology and prepare more young women for careers in the digital economy.
