MTN Yellow Care 2025: social media training boosts Business dreams of artisans in Upper West

MTN Ghana has taken a proactive step in boosting small businesses in the Upper West Region by training 40 individuals in effective social media marketing. These trainees, including men and women, are skilled in various trades like barbering, tailoring, hairdressing dressmaking and fashion design. The initiative is aims to empower these entrepreneurs by equipping them with the skills to utilize platforms like Facebook and Tiktok to showcase and sell their products to a broader audience.

Speaking on the sideline during a two- day training in Wa on 13th June, 2025, Mr. Seth Owusu Nyamekye, the Upper West Territory Manager of MTN, emphasized the importance of adapting to modern business tools. “Social media has become the norm of the day. This training is designed to help artisans extend their customer base beyond the Upper West Region and tap into national and global markets,” he said.

He noted that although many artisans could not be accommodated due to space constraints, those selected are expected to share the knowledge with their peers. “This isn’t just training, it’s a ripple effect. We want them to return to their communities and teach others, so that no one is left behind in the digital economy.”

Mr. Seth Owusu Nyamekye revealed that, the MTN G Yellow Care is an annual event which starts from June 1 and concludes on June 21 every year

The training sessions was organized in collaboration with Noni Hub, which was focused on practical skills by helping the participants to create engaging captions, uploading product photos and videos, crafting business profiles, and understanding the use of hashtags and keywords.

Mr. Abdul Fatawu Mahabub, a Media Assistant at Noni Hub, reiterated that, the program intent to help artisans sell their products beyond Wa. “Most of them have physical shops that depend on foot traffic. With this training, they can reach customers in Accra, Kumasi, and even internationally.

Our focus is to help them move beyond brick-and-mortar sales,” Mr. Mahabub explained. “Now, even if you don’t pass by someone’s shop, you can still find their services online. It’s about breaking barriers and tapping into wider markets.”

Participants expressed excitement and gratitude to MTN for the opportunity, Mr. Yussif Abdul Rahman also known as “Humble” a barber said, the experience was eye-opening. “I wasn’t using social media for my barbering business before. But now I know how to advertise my work to people even outside town. ‘’Now I can post my services online, and people who didn’t even know I existed can now find me.

Another participant, Madam Rashida Seidu, a hairdresser, also praised the initiative. “We’ve learned so much. Now we know how to post our products and attract customers online. 

I’m thankful to MTN for equipping us with such powerful tools.
