Some residents of Wechiau-Bao, a farming community in the Wa West District of the Upper West Region have received a donation of 7 packets of zinc from Prof. Joseph Ofori-Dankwa, a Senior Lecturer based in the USA and a native of Cape Coast.
This generous act comes after a heavy rainstorm hit the Sanuori Electoral Area on April 18, 2025, causing significant damage, displacement and left several residents in dire need.
A total of 38 houses were affected comprising of over 100 households and over 400 individuals. Each of the household has not less than 5 members meaning over 400 children, adults and aged are affected by the disaster.
The heavy rainstorm also brought down 8 high tension electricity poles, ripped off schools, and health facilities
The disaster has had a devastating impact on a blind woman who is a widow, leaving her homeless with her children and grandchildren.
Hon. Claudius Dare Kuuyore (Koo Red), Assembly Member for Sanuori Electoral Area, has expressed gratitude to Prof. Ofori-Dankwa for his kindness and support, describing him as a personal friend, mentor, and father figure.
Some beneficiaries of the donations expressed their profound gratitude to the donor, Professor Joseph Ofori-Dankwa and the Assembly member for the timely support. They also appealed the district assembly, NGOs, and benevolent organizations to come their aid
However, Hon. Claudius Dare Kuuyore has indicated that, the community still requires further assistance to recover from the disaster thereby appealed to the general public, NGOs, and individuals to provide support in various forms, including:
Cash Donations: To help affected families rebuild their lives
– Food and Clothing: Essential items for daily survival
– Shelter and Building Materials: To restore homes and provide security
– Other Forms of Support: any additional aid that can help restore hope and normalcy
The Assembly member Claudius Dare Kuuyore, continues to solicit for support from the Wa West District Assembly, NADMO, Wa West MP, churches, NGOs, charitable organizations, banking institutions, Associations and individuals to come to the aid of the affected persons to restore lives.
Speaking in an interview with Citizen Journalist Albert of Progress news, Hon. Claudius Dare Kuuyoro noted that, the community, which is predominantly a farming community, saw farmers’ livelihoods destroyed in the storm. “These farmers, already struggling due to the recent drought, now face the loss of crops such as maize, groundnuts and soybeans’ he stated.
He stated that, without assistance, they will have nothing to sustain them in the short term as many of the affected residents are currently living in the open.
The residents have described the storm as intense, leaving chaos and widespread destruction behind. Many were left to pick up the pieces, counting their losses and assessing the damage.
