Wa West District: Residents of Jowapen threaten election boycott over lack of Potable water and deplorable road Conditions.

The Residents of Jowapen, a section of Bichuutee, a farming community under the Tanina electoral area in the Wa West District of the Upper West are Threatening to Boycott the 2024 election Over Lack of Potable Water and Deplorable Road Conditions.

 The residents, who are mostly women have been expressing fears of contracting contagious diseases such as cholera and typhoid as the community currently shares its sources of water with domestic animals due to lack of borehole

In an exclusive interview with Citizen Journalist Albert Jortee of Radio Progress, the residents indicated that, they need to walk long distances and cross deep rivers in order to fetch borehole Water from the other section of the community but the road is a death trap for the aged and breastfeeding women.

” We don’t have any source of water apart from collecting rain Water or fetching from the stream that is being contaminated with human feces and animals, the residents added’.

The absence of toilet facilities has led to open defecation, which further contaminate the streams and threatening the health of those who rely on them for water for their domestic chores.

According to Mr. John Buole, a Native of Jowapen, the community lack a single borehole, thought the former member of Parliament for the area, Hon Joseph Yele Chireh Drilled one in 2016, it has also been breakdown beyond repairs leaving to shear the stream with animals in fearsome competition.

The Residents of Jowapen have hinted that, they may not participate in the upcoming general elections on 7th December since they may be away in search for potable water.

They are now are appealing to the district assembly and other relevant authorities including Parliamentary candidates to provide the community with a borehole and fix their deplorable road to enable exercise their civic rights on 7th December, 2024.
