World Population Day is observed on July 11 every year to raise awareness about the importance of population issues and their impact on the environment, development, and human well-being. The day was established by the United Nations in 1989, following the recommendation of the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The aim of World Population Day is to raise awareness about population growth and its implications encourage individuals and governments to take action to address population-related issues, promote sustainable development and reproductive health as well as empower individuals, especially women and girls, to make informed choices about their reproductive health.
Each year, World Population Day focuses on a specific theme.
