Exclusive breast feeding is essential for both mothers and new born babies – a midwife says

A midwife at the upper West Regional hospital madam Muslim Nasrat has stated that exclusive breastfeeding is essential for both mothers in newborn babies.

Speaking during a radio discussion call, time with Ghana health service on Radio Progress she said that exclusive breastfeeding, which means breastfeeding without any additional foods or liquids for the first six months, has numerous benefits for both mothers and babies.  This can be followed by feeding the child with lighter food supplements. Some of the advantages include, optimal nutrition and digestive health, enhanced immune system development, reduced risk of infections, diarrhea, and pneumonia

According to her, exclusive breast feeding lowers the child’s risk of allergies and asthma, improved cognitive development and intelligence as well as creating a better bonding and attachment between mother and baby. She said babies need from eight to eleven hours daily for health grow

For the mother, she said, breastfeeding allows for Faster recovery from childbirth, reduced risk of postpartum depression, lower risk of breast and ovarian cancer and delayed return of menstruation and improves emotional well-being. The breast milk is also convenient, affordable and accessible to the mother naturally.

She stated that, the World Health Organization (WHO) and other health organizations recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years or beyond.
