The Member of Parliament for the Wa East constituency, Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw in collaboration with a Turkey-based non-governmental organization (NGO), West Africa Humanitarian Agency (WAHA), has successfully organized hernia and hydro cells repair and surgery program for his constituents.
A health screening exercise aimed at identifying individuals with hernia and providing them with the necessary medical attention was carried out by medical personnel from Wa municipality and Wa East health directorate. According to the MP, a total of 137 people including 9 children were screened during first phase of the exercise, with 60 of them diagnosed as requiring emergency surgery for hernia and hydro cells repair.
The affected individuals are subsequently being operated on Saturday through Sunday and expected to be completed by Monday the 4th of March, 2024 at the Wa Municipal Hospital. A combined team of medical professionals from Turkey are working with their Ghanaian counterparts on this project.
Speaking on the success of the exercise, the Member of Parliament expressed his gratitude to WAHA for their support and commitment to improving the health of the people in the area haven supported his cataract surgery project in the area in 2022 and 2023. He noted that the exercise was timely, as many of the affected individuals had been living with hernia for years without access to proper medical care.
The MP also urged other Development Partners, NGOs and other philanthropic organizations to emulate the gesture of the Turkey-based NGO by supporting healthcare initiatives in the area. He noted that the government alone cannot provide all the necessary health services to the people, hence the need for collaboration with other stakeholders.
Residents of the area who benefited from the exercise expressed their appreciation to the MP and the NGO for their intervention.
They noted that the exercise had brought relief to them and their families and expressed hope that similar initiatives would be organized in the future. Feeding and lorry fare of the patients and their relatives are catered for by the MP.
